# 30-Day Speed Reading Challenge

**The 30-Day Speed Reading Challenge** is a free daily practice plan: 15 minutes a day on reading forward with fewer habitual re-reads, reading and vocabulary, and faster pacing, with a weekly retest scored as Effective Reading Speed (ERS) so speed only counts when comprehension holds. Open a day's tool, do the practice, then press **Mark done**. You can also mark the day done from the bar at the top of the tool. Test days are ticked for you when you finish the test.

Day 1•Baseline⏱️ 12 min

### Baseline Test

Take the reading speed test to get your starting WPM and Effective Reading Speed (ERS). Everything after this is compared with today.

- Read one passage at your normal, comfortable pace.
- Answer the 4 quiz questions without looking back.
- Your result is saved in this browser, and Day 1 is marked done when you finish.

[Take the Baseline Test](https://speedreadtest.com/?challengeDay=1)

Ticked for you when you finish the test.

Day 2•Pacer⏱️ 15 min

### Read with a Pacer

Use a moving guide to keep your eyes going forward, so you re-read lines less out of habit.

- Open the Reading Pacer in "Smooth Beam" mode.
- Set the speed to your baseline WPM + 25.
- Read 2 passages, following the moving line.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&challengeDay=2)

Day 3•Disappearing Ink⏱️ 15 min

### Disappearing Ink: Read Each Line Once

Words fade once the pacer passes them, so you practice reading each line once without going back.

- Switch the pacer to "Disappearing Ink" mode.
- Read 2 passages at a pace that still feels comfortable (around 275 WPM).
- If you lose the meaning, slow down by 25 WPM.

[Open Disappearing Ink Mode](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=disappear&wpm=275&challengeDay=3)

Day 4•Re-Reading⏱️ 15 min

### Go Back on Purpose

Read with the pacer, and go back only when you’ve lost the meaning. Those look-backs help you understand, so the aim is to drop only the habit ones.

- Set the Reading Pacer to a comfortable speed.
- Read 2 passages, and pause to go back whenever you lose the meaning.
- Notice how often you went back because you needed to, and how often out of habit.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&challengeDay=4)

Day 5•Your Text⏱️ 12 min

### Pace Your Own Text

Use the pacer on something you actually want to read and see whether it feels easier.

- Paste an article or chapter into the Reading Pacer.
- Set a speed that still feels comfortable.
- Read for 10 minutes, then sum up the text in one sentence.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&challengeDay=5)

Day 6•Endurance⏱️ 15 min

### 15-Minute Reading Run

Put the week together: 15 minutes of steady, paced reading without stopping.

- Paste a long article (1,500+ words).
- Set the pacer to a comfortable pace, around 300 WPM.
- Read the whole piece in one go, going back only if you lose the meaning.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&wpm=300&challengeDay=6)

Day 7•Retest⏱️ 12 min

### Week 1 Retest

Retake the test and compare your WPM and comprehension with Day 1.

- Take the reading speed test on a new passage.
- Compare your ERS with your Day 1 result.
- Well done: that’s the first week done!

[Take the Week 1 Retest](https://speedreadtest.com/?challengeDay=7)

Ticked for you when you finish the test.

Day 8•Your Book⏱️ 12 min

### Pick Your Book

Choose a book you actually want to read. This week is about reading itself, the best-supported way to get faster.

- Pick a book you want to finish, fiction or non-fiction.
- Check how long it should take at your speed.
- Read for 10 minutes at a comfortable pace.

[See How Long It Will Take](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/book-reading-time?challengeDay=8)

Day 9•Daily Reading⏱️ 15 min

### Read for 15 Minutes

No drills today. Read your book at a pace where you follow every sentence.

- Put your phone away and read for 15 minutes.
- Go back whenever you lose the thread.
- Note the page you reached.

[Read the Tips](https://speedreadtest.com/blog/how-to-read-faster?challengeDay=9#read-more)

Day 10•Vocabulary⏱️ 15 min

### Start a Word List

Words you don’t know slow you down. Start collecting them while you read.

- Read for 12 minutes and mark any word you aren’t sure of.
- Guess each word from its sentence, then look it up.
- Keep a list of at least 3 words to come back to.

[Read the Tips](https://speedreadtest.com/blog/how-to-read-faster?challengeDay=10#vocabulary)

Day 11•New Topic⏱️ 15 min

### Read About Something New

Knowing a subject helps you read about it faster. Start building that on a topic you’re curious about.

- Pick a topic you’d like to know more about.
- Read 2 short articles on it.
- Notice whether the second one felt easier.

[Read the Tips](https://speedreadtest.com/blog/how-to-read-faster?challengeDay=11#background-knowledge)

Day 12•Recall⏱️ 15 min

### Explain What You Read

Read a section of your book, then explain it in your own words to see how much you really followed.

- Read for 12 minutes.
- Close the book and sum up what you read in 3 sentences.
- Open it again and check what you missed.

[Read the Tips](https://speedreadtest.com/blog/how-to-read-faster?challengeDay=12#read-more)

Day 13•Schulte Table⏱️ 15 min

### Optional Focus Warm-Up

Try a Schulte table or word pyramids if you enjoy them. They haven’t been shown to raise reading speed, so treat them as a warm-up.

- Do 2 rounds of the 5×5 grid, or 5 minutes of Word Pyramids.
- Then read your book for 10 minutes.
- If you’d rather skip the warm-up, just read for 15 minutes.

[Open the Schulte Table](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/schulte-table?size=5&challengeDay=13)[Or: Word Pyramids](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/vision-span-trainer?drill=words-cognitive&challengeDay=13)

Day 14•Retest⏱️ 12 min

### Week 2 Retest

Retake the test and check your speed and comprehension against Day 1.

- Take the reading speed test on a new passage.
- Compare your WPM and ERS with Day 1.
- Check that you still get 3 of 4 questions right (75%+).

[Take the Week 2 Retest](https://speedreadtest.com/?challengeDay=14)

Ticked for you when you finish the test.

Day 15•Inner Voice⏱️ 15 min

### Your Inner Voice

Notice your inner reading voice (subvocalization) while you read at a steady, set pace.

- Most people hear an inner voice when reading silently. It helps you understand, so the aim is not to silence it.
- Do only Stage 1 of the Read Faster Drill (1 minute at 250 WPM) with the sound on.
- Notice when your inner voice keeps up and when it rushes or drops words.

[Open Stage 1 of the Drill](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/overspeed-trainer?wpm=250&challengeDay=15)

Day 16•Over-Speed⏱️ 12 min

### The 3-Minute Read Faster Drill

Read for one minute each at 1×, 2× and 3× your pace, then go back to normal and notice how it feels.

- Minute 1: your normal pace (for example 250 WPM).
- Minute 2: double speed (500 WPM). Just keep your eyes moving.
- Minute 3: triple speed (750 WPM). This is a sprint, not reading, so expect to miss most of it.
- Back at your normal speed, notice whether it feels easier.

[Start the 3-Minute Drill](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/overspeed-trainer?challengeDay=16)

Day 17•Line Focus⏱️ 15 min

### Line Focus Reading

Read with Line Focus, which dims every line but the one you’re on, at a comfortable pace, and compare your comprehension with normal reading.

- Set the pacer close to your normal pace, with Line Focus on.
- Read 2 short non-fiction articles.
- Check how much you remember compared with normal reading.

[Open the Pacer in Line Focus](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=focus&challengeDay=17)

Day 18•Sprint⏱️ 12 min

### Short Sprint (Practice, Not Reading)

One short, very fast round to practise moving forward. You won’t understand much at this speed, so it doesn’t count as reading.

- Set your base pace to 250 WPM (the 3× stage becomes 750 WPM).
- During the fast stage, just keep your eyes moving.
- Afterwards, read at your normal pace and notice how it feels.

[Start the Short Sprint](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/overspeed-trainer?wpm=250&challengeDay=18)

Day 19•Pacer⏱️ 15 min

### Paced Reading at 400 WPM

Use the pacer on a long article at a slightly faster pace than usual.

- Open the Reading Pacer at 400 WPM (lower it if you lose the meaning).
- Read a long article of your choice.
- Keep your eyes moving with the guide.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&wpm=400&challengeDay=19)

Turn on the audio clicks and keep your reading steady.

- Turn on the sound clicks in the Reading Pacer.
- Choose "Smooth Beam" mode at a pace you can follow.
- Keep your reading steady with the beat, and slow down if you lose the meaning.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&challengeDay=20)

Day 21•Retest⏱️ 12 min

### Week 3 Retest

Retake the test to see whether your practice shows up in your Effective Reading Speed.

- Take the reading speed test on a new passage.
- Compare your ERS with Day 1 and Day 14.
- If you get 75% or more right and beat the top score, add your score to the leaderboard.

[Take the Week 3 Retest](https://speedreadtest.com/?challengeDay=21)

Ticked for you when you finish the test.

Day 22•Previewing⏱️ 15 min

### Preview Before You Read

Skim headings and summaries first, and estimate how long a chapter will take.

- Paste a book chapter into the Reading Time Calculator.
- Compare the time at the average 238 WPM with your own speed.
- Spend 2 minutes skimming the headings and summaries before reading.

[Open the Reading Time Calculator](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/reading-time-calculator?challengeDay=22)

Day 23•Layered Reading⏱️ 15 min

### Reading a Book in Layers

Try a simple method for books: preview first, then read properly, then sum up.

- Layer 1: spend 2 minutes skimming one chapter’s headings, first sentences and summary.
- Layer 2: paste the chapter into the pacer and read it properly.
- Layer 3: write down the main points in a few lines, without looking back.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=beam&challengeDay=23)

Day 24•Hard Text⏱️ 15 min

### Pacing Harder Material

Use the pacer on harder non-fiction, such as a research article or technical document.

- Paste a harder article or technical text.
- Use Disappearing Ink mode at a pace you can follow (start lower than usual).
- Check that you can explain the main idea afterwards.

[Open the Reading Pacer](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/pacer-reader?mode=disappear&challengeDay=24)

Day 25•Combo⏱️ 15 min

### Sprint, Then Real Reading

Do the 3-minute Read Faster Drill, then go straight to your book at your normal pace.

- Run the 3 minutes at 250 → 500 → 750 WPM. These rounds are practice, not reading.
- Read your book for 10 minutes at your normal pace.
- Sum up what you read in a sentence or two.

[Start the Read Faster Drill](https://speedreadtest.com/tools/overspeed-trainer?wpm=250&challengeDay=25)

Day 26•Vocabulary⏱️ 15 min

### Review Your Word List

Go back to the words you collected in Week 2, and add new ones from your reading.

- Read for 10 minutes and add any new words to your list.
- Test yourself on the words from Week 2.
- Use 2 of them in a sentence of your own.

[Read the Tips](https://speedreadtest.com/blog/how-to-read-faster?challengeDay=26#vocabulary)

Day 27•Recall⏱️ 15 min

### Long Essay Recall

🧠 30-Day Plan

## The 30-Day Practice Timeline

**How the 30 days are organised:** Week 1 focuses on reading forward with fewer habitual re-reads; Week 2 on reading and vocabulary; Week 3 on faster pacing practice; and Week 4 on applying what works to real books. Each week ends with a reading speed and comprehension retest. The drill paces below are practice settings, not expected test scores. The 2× and 3× sprints go faster, up to about 750 WPM, but they are brief practice, not reading.

Many people who try to speed read give up because they push their pace too fast too soon and comprehension collapses. A gradual plan, with a retest each week, makes it easy to see what actually helps you.

| Week | Focus | Primary Tool & Drill | Drill pace (practice) | Comprehension goal on retest |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Week 1: Foundation | Fewer habitual re-reads | Reading Pacer (Disappearing Ink) | 250 – 300 WPM | 75% or higher |
| Week 2: Reading & Vocabulary | Reading more and building vocabulary | Your own book & a word list | Your normal pace | 75% or higher |
| Week 3: Over-Speed | Faster pacing and your inner voice | 1X-2X-3X Sprints & Line Focus | 300 – 450 WPM | 75% or higher |
| Week 4: Mastery | Reading real books in layers | Previewing & layered reading | Up to about 500 WPM | 75% or higher |

## Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 30-Day Speed Reading Challenge work?

The 30-Day Speed Reading Challenge is a free daily practice plan with a reading speed retest every week, so you can see what actually changes. Each day takes 12 to 15 minutes and focuses on one habit: re-reading lines, reading and vocabulary, your inner voice, or remembering what you read. The plan tracks Effective Reading Speed (speed × comprehension), because speed only counts if you still understand the text.

How much time do I need to commit each day?

About 12 to 15 minutes: a main activity (your own book, the reading pacer or a short sprint) and a quick check of what you remember. A little every day matters more than long sessions.

What results can I realistically expect after 30 days?

It varies from person to person. Regular practice can make you somewhat faster and more comfortable, but research (Rayner et al., 2016) finds that big jumps in speed usually come with lower comprehension. That is why the plan retests every week and scores you on Effective Reading Speed, so you see your real change instead of a promise.

Is this 30-day training program completely free?

Yes. Popular paid speed-reading courses cost about $100 online, and in-person workshops run $500 to $1,000. Here the full 30-day plan and every tool are free, with no paywall and no account. Your streak and progress are saved only in your browser, and you can download a backup file to keep them safe or move them to another device.

Can I do the challenge on mobile devices?

Yes. All the tools work on phones and tablets. For the optional Schulte table and word pyramids on Day 13, a laptop or desktop screen is a little more comfortable.
